About This Course

The Certificate IV in Home and Community Care (HACC) course is designed for workers who provide services to clients in their homes and other community care settings. This type of work involves services to individuals with complex needs, and/or work with groups of older people.

It may include training and support to assist independence and community participation, which may be provided as part of activities and programs in a variety of home and community care settings. These workers report to service managers and liaise with professionals and other service providers and may be required to supervise and/or coordinate a other staff.

Entry Requirements

1) To enrol in Certificate IV in Home and Community Care course, you must hold these compulsory units from CHC30308 Certificate III in Home and Community Care (or equivalent):

  • CHCAC318B Work effectively with older people
  • CHCDIS301B Work effectively with people with a disability
  • CHCICS304B Work effectively with carers

You can gain these pre-requisites requirements through a training program or through a recognition process. If you do not hold these units, you are able to study them prior to the commencement of this qualification, subject to the per unit charge.

2) We suggest that candidates have at least 6 months experience in a job role that relates to this qualification.

The College will assess your application and may ask you for futher information about your professional background and/or language skills to ensure that this is the best program for you.

Course Structure

The Certificate IV in Home and Community Care course is made up of 15 units:

  • 6 core units

Delivery Modes
Online Learning

You can complete the Certificate IV in Home and Community Care online. Online learning means you complete the entire course using the online learning platform. The content is presented per unit – you simply find the right unit and start reading. It’s like reading a book on your computer screen with images and pictures. When you finish a unit, you complete the assessment tasks, which are also done online. It’s easy, fast and a great way to achieve a Home and Community Care qualification.

Distance Learning

Distance learning is an alternative to online learning for completing the Certificate IV in Home and Community Care at your own pace. Distance learning means you study using the textbooks that we mail to you. You work through the course materials at your own pace and return your completed assessments by mail. This method is designed for those who prefer the more traditional form of study using books in hard copy.

Blended Learning

Many of our students prefer to complete the Certificate IV in Home and Community Care using a mix of both online learning and distance education. They do the reading tasks using the textbooks but complete the assessments online. It’s a practical approach to learning that offers great flexibility.

Clasroom and Workplace-based Learning

Work Experience

Some of the assessment tasks in the Certificate IV in Home and Community Care relate directly to the work environment. For these units you will need verification from a workplace supervisor as evidence of competence. This means you will need to complete work experience for a minimum of 40 hours. You will need to make these arrangements yourself.

We suggest you start planning for work experience when you are ready to enrol in a course.

Please note that in order to work in any federally funded aged care service in Australia, you will need to undergo a criminal record check. You will be required to pay for any criminal checks that the College conducts on your behalf.
