Ricardo – It’s never too late to find a job you love
‘Doing Certificate IV in Disability with National College Australia was one of the best things I have ever done. I joined the family business after I left school and then started a university course in graphic design. When that didn’t work out, I went into construction, tried some retail work and then found myself back in the family business again. I had a job, I had security but I wasn’t happy with what I was doing until a friend suggested I try this course he had just finished. He was all praise about National College and said that the online course was just for me – so I gave it go. I don’t even know why I considered working in disability when I didn’t have any experience in this field. I thought ‘well, I’ve tried so much, I may as well try this’.
My friend was right. National College had me enrolled and started in the course in less than a week. Before I knew it, I had finished three units and they even helped me find an employer to do some work experience. My assessor was just amazing; he was always there when I had a question and when he wasn’t available to talk, he would make a time with me so I could ask my questions and just get through the subjects. I finished the course in about half the normal time and the best part was that I got offered a job with the place I did the work experience!
I’ve been in disability work ever since I work with a group of people who have mild to severe intellectual disabilities; I help them get around and I care for their personal needs. I never thought it was a job I would be interested in but when you see people waiting for you each day, and you see the smile on their faces when you walk through the door, nothing beats that”.
Ricardo is one of many people who come to us because they’re seeking a career change. Some have been working in the same industry for years; others have tried a few industries but people often find they feel ‘stuck’ after a while in routine jobs and they seek purpose and fulfilment in careers they never thought possible. Ricardo is now a team leader and has since gone on to complete a training and assessment qualification and is now also working as an Assessor for National College Australia. He is yet another success story.
