Georgia’s Story – what a career in community services can mean
“I had been out of the workforce for about 4 years and unemployed for 6 months when I contacted National College. I had finished high school but didn’t have any other qualification to my name. I knew I needed to find a job but I had no idea what I wanted to do until I found NCA and started to speak to a Course Advisor who asked me some questions. When I told her I really wanted to work with people but I didn’t know what I could do, she suggested community services. It was the beginning of a new chapter in my life.”
About 2 in every 10 people who come to us have a very similar story to Georgia’s, they’re keen to get back into the workforce but they have no idea what they want to do. Georgia knew that she didn’t want ‘just an office job’ but that she wanted “to help people help themselves. After growing up in a broken home, my brother and I had a pretty tough childhood, our parents had problems that we were burdened with – I wish I could change the past and give myself the childhood I deserved but I can’t so when I first thought about doing some training in community services I thought that I might be able to give other kids a better childhood”.
George went on to complete a Diploma in Community Services (CHC52015) and now works as a case manager for a large non-for-profit community services provider in Victoria. “I get to work with real people every day, I meet families and people from all walks of life who need support in different ways and my job is to help them find and access the different support systems out there. I’m able to make life just a little better for those who need it – I couldn’t imagine doing anything else. Thank you to National College Australia for helping me find a career I love and for inspiring me to change my life”.
