Non-Profit vs Government vs Private Sector Jobs in Community Services

If you’re interested in getting a job in community services it’s important to understand the type of jobs that are available. After all, non-profit, government and private sector jobs, each provide community services in a slightly different way. Despite these differences, community services all aim to promote many aspects of people’s lives including; spiritual, emotional, mental, physical and social health.

Here’s the difference between non-profit, government and private sector jobs in community services.

Non-Profit Sector

The non-profit sector in Australia is also known as the community sector. Without government or private funding, the non-profit sector is reliant heavily upon donations and volunteer work. Non-profit organisations may provide a service that contributes to health, education, social welfare and more. The environments you can work in range from large hospitals to small environmental groups.

Government Sector

The Government sector jobs in community services are similar to those of non-profits but have the added benefit of receiving government funding.

Community services jobs in the government sector may include:

  • Aged, disability and home care
  • Child welfare and youth services
  • Employment services
  • Community Development

Private Sector

Private sector jobs in community services make up a large proportion of community services jobs. They are run by private organisations, for profit, and it may not receive government funding. Jobs in the private sector may include:

  • Childcare services
  • Private hospitals
  • Residential care services (such as private aged care centres)

All community service jobs bring their own advantages and rewards. Not for profit organisations can be fabulous to work for if you are passionate about a particular area or cause. Government jobs in community services can attract good job security and have other added benefits such as long service leave.

Private jobs allow you to choose a field you are passionate about and excel within a private organisation. The choice is yours!

Where Can I Find Community Service Jobs?

Community service jobs can be found online through popular job boards, through Victoria’s Department of Human Services (DHS) or through your local council.
