8 ways students are using LinkedIn to improve their career chances

There are many reasons you may have decided to enrol for some training. Most of our students tell us they are seeking career advancement or new directions in their career.

After training comes the next challenging part: finding the right job role. Stiff competition in the jobs market will definitely go your way if you have good results in your course, but that’s only the start – employers are looking for so much more.

Many employers and recruiters will do a simple background check on you using publicly-available information on the Internet before they invite you for an interview.  Make sure you know what information is available about you and take control by building a positive social media profile.

One of the most important social media networks when you want employers to notice you is LinkedIn. LinkedIn is more of a professional social platform compared to Facebook or Twitter.

It’s more than a job site and a way to publicise your resume. It’s a platform that helps students learn more about their chosen industry, and to engage with people who may be future employers. Make sure you employ LinkedIn to your best advantage.

As a student, how exactly can I use LinkedIn?

  1. Learn industry trends and career development tricks. Getting started early and studying how professionals are using LinkedIn to boost their careers can help you gain an advantage over your peers. Communities already exist on LinkedIn, so you can easily find and join LinkedIn groups of interest. It’s no different from a student joining a fraternity or a club. As a student, it helps you grow your network and learn which skills you will need to land your dream job.
  2. Share insights, great advice and network in your industry. This is especially true for young professionals. However, be careful not to join LinkedIn groups just to ask for a job or persuade someone to hire you. LinkedIn was created for the purpose of functioning as a career development tool not as a job site. Always keep in mind that LinkedIn users fill the shoes both of a teacher and student. Don’t be discouraged if you are just a student, after all, you have signed on to LinkedIn to learn from the experts!
  3. Search and join groups that are relevant to your course or field. In order to learn more about your field, current issues and trends join groups that give you access to the most current topics and discussions.
  4. Increase your profile and make yourself easy to find by contributing. Ask questions, give tips, and engage in relevant discussions.
  5. If you have a marketable skills, include it in your skills list. People who know and like your work will endorse your skills and this is always good for employers who are looking for people who are multi-skilled. For instance, are you good at creative writing or do you excel in web development? These skills are a vital part of your profile. This will also help people searching for that skill to find you.
  6. Include links to your blog or online portfolio. This allows potential employers to check your background, experience and work samples.
  7. Ask for recommendations. You can ask people who know your work to recommend you for certain skills. Be sure to ask only known colleagues or college trainers.
  8. Receiving email job alerts. Once you have created your professional profile on LinkedIn, set email alerts to receive notifications of recommended jobs. As soon as you log in to your home page, you will see new notifications.
